“You Can’t Shut Your Eyes Against the Light” appeared in The Long Story, No. 7, Spring 1989.
She pushes and feels as if she’s turning inside out and her brains are popping out her ears. The bed starts to move again. The light is even brighter. She takes a deep breath and screams–long, loud, strong, and powerful. It feels wonderful. She’ll do it again.
“Don’t do that,” a male voice says from somewhere behind her. “It echoes in here.”
