I am so pleased to share this review and interview for the launch of Grief Songs.

Self-Published Saturday is my attempt to showcase works by self-published authors. Saturdays are dedicated solely to self-published/indie authors and their works. These authors have to do it all, from editing to cover design to marketing. Self-published Saturday (or SPS) is my effort to try and help with the marketing side of things as much as I can. I also need your help in the form of sharing this post with your social media followers to give these authors more exposure. Today I want to bring your attention to a wonderful book of poems by Elizabeth Gaffreau. Written in Tanka style, they are a tribute to her departed family members. Liz also agreed to answer some questions for us, so don’t miss the Q&A below!

Speaking of Tanka, check my wife’s friend Jeanne Lupton’s book ‘Love Is Tanka,’ available on Amazon. She also has a humorous chapbook, ‘In The Popular Lane.’ Here’s a sample:

give him
back to the City
with more or less grace”

Great job on the interview, Liz. I’ve got a few follow-up questions. I hope you don’t mind if I pick your brain a little further. Great job on the trailer as well. The music fits the images so well. I think it’s great that you dove into the deep end with Tanka poetry.

I have a copy. I put off reading it for a while. Having lost both parents in the past ten years I feared I would find it too sad to bear. But it’s beautiful. So poignant and well written and with a superb use of photographs.

What a lovely review and interview, Liz I loved your description of the tanks poetic form as being like swaddling. I look forward to reading your book.

Thank you, Tracy. I hope you enjoy the book. (I thought the swaddling analogy was apt, myself!)

It may be a while before I get to it, Liz. I need a new electronic reading device. Covid has meant that such things are in short supply.

My goodness! I devoured this interview. Bonnie did a masterful job. It’s interesting what strikes a reader, and I was struck by your comment, “Writing the poems was a way to stay with my family just a little longer.” Just a little longer. That was a lump in my throat. I can picture you going through all those old family photos and feeing poetry.

Thank you, Jennie. Whenever missing my family becomes too much to bear, I write a story or a poem.

Liz, congratulations on the thoughtful and insightful review. I very much enjoyed the interview with Bonnie and learning more about you, your life and also how you came to the format of the tanka. It is wonderful that you didn’t find it at all restrictive rather:
‘The confines of the tanka form were actually a saving grace because I had to focus at the line, word, and syllable level. I found those confines comforting, like an infant being swaddled. ‘
Beautifully written and if I ever attempt the format I will imagine I’m an infant being swaddled!
Hope you have a lovely start to October!
